Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a renal replacement modality for
patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is comparable to hemodialysis,
allows autonomy since it is done at home, thus improves quality of life.
Placement of an abdominal catheter for dialysis is commonly an open surgical
technique. Complications are due to mechanical causes and may require multiple
open surgical corrections. Peritoneal dialysis initiation is commonly performed in
our institution. Alternative technique such as laparoscopy can treat recurrent
catheter malfunctions.
