The broad aim of the PHILIPPINE BOARD OF LAPARO-ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY (PBLS), the examining and certifying arm of the Philippine Association of Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgeons (PALES), is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of MIS; and thereby to serve the cause of public health by providing board certification to advanced minimally invasive general surgeons who have met a defined standard of education training and knowledge in the field of MIS.
TRACK 1: Graduate of a PALES Accredited MIS Training Programs before December 31, 2022 must submit the following requirements:
A. Application Letter addressed to the President of PALES and Chair of the PBLS
B. Recommendation letter from the Program Director of the MIS Training Program that the applicant has satisfactorily completed an appropriate education experience and attained a sufficiently high level of knowledge, clinical judgment, and technical skills, as well as moral and ethical fitness
C. Certificate of Training in Advanced MIS from a PALES Accredited Training Program
D. Certificate as DIPLOMATE of the Philippine Board of Surgery ( PBS )
TRACK 2: PALES Fellow in good standing with formal training in Advanced MIS in a PALES recognized training institution/s abroad before December 31, 2022:
A. Application Letter addressed to the President of PALES and Chair of the PBLS
B. Recommendation letter from the Program Director of the MIS Training Program that the applicant has satisfactorily completed an appropriate education experience and attained a sufficiently high level of knowledge, clinical judgment, and technical skills, as well as moral and ethical fitness
C. Certificate of Training in Advanced MIS ( Local or Abroad ) - MINIMUM 1 MONTH HANDS-ON TRAINING
D. Certificate of Fellow of PALES in Basic Laparoscopy
E. Endorsement from the PALES Chapter and at-least 2 references from active advanced MIS surgeons.
F. List of Advanced MIS cases performed as surgeon ( SEE YELLOW BOX ) certified by the Medical Director and Chair of the Department of Surgery of the hospital where the MIS procedures were performed. The advanced MIS cases must be performed on at least three different organ systems: (a) Upper Gastrointestinal Tract (Including Bariatric), (b) Lower Gastrointestinal Tract; (c) Liver, Hepatobiliary Tree, Pancreas and Spleen; (d) Hernia; (e) Retroperitoneal; (f) Endocrine such as Thyroid and Adrenals; and (g) Trauma
Basic laparoscopy cases ( diagnostic laparoscopy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and Appendectomy) are excluded.
PHILIPPINE BOARD OF LAPARO-ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY (PBLS)
An advanced minimally invasive surgeon who has been certified as Diplomate by the PBLS has completed an approved educational training program and an evaluation process, including written and oral examinations, designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to provide quality patient treatment and care. In addition, a PBLS Diplomate in advanced MIS who continuously participates and successfully fulfills the requirements of the PBLS Continuous Certification program demonstrate that they are taking steps following their initial certification to preserve and enhance their knowledge and skills. Board certification by the PBLS is a voluntary process that demonstrates a minimally invasive general surgeon’s commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning, constant advancement in technical skills; and quality patient care. Hence, a PBLS Diplomate has attained the highest certification in this specialty, and through participation in the Continuous Certification, demonstrate his/her expert qualifications in the field of advanced MIS prescribed by the Unified MIS Council of PALES. PALES fellows who are trained and practicing advanced MIS in general surgery may apply until MAY 31, 2023. Eligibility criteria are shown in the succeeding page.
